Trump choice for secretary of education calls for 'local control' of schools

According to Louis Freedberg of EdSource.org President-elect's choice for education secretary, Betsy DeVos, called for “local control” of schools in her most recent comments since being formally selected. 

DeVos described “finally ending” what she believes is “the federalized Common Core” which are the academic standards in math and English language arts adopted by California and 41 other states, along with the District of Columbia. 

DeVos is a well known school choice advocate who has devoted decades to promoting its expansion in Michigan. Her efforts, though controversial include expanding access to charter schools and taxpayer-supported vouchers for private schools. DeVos was not clear on what she meant by local control and how she plans to implement any ideas in the future. Read more here.
